A couple who boarded a flight to Hawaii has been charged with reckless endangerment after boarding a flight, all while knowing they had tested positive for COVID 19.

Wesley Moribe and Courtney Peterson boarded a United Airlines flight with their four-year-old son from San Francisco to Lihue, Hawaii, even though San Francisco International Airport officials told them to isolate themselves and not travel.

Once they landed at Lihue Airport, the couple, who are residents of Wailua, was escorted by police and then arrested for second-degree reckless endangerment. Child Protective Services was notified, and a family member took their son home.

“They knowingly boarded a flight aware of their positive COVID-19 test results, placing the passengers of the flight in danger of death,” Coco Zickos, a spokeswoman for Kauai police, told NBC News in a statement.

A spokesman from the Hawaii Covid-19 Joint Information Center said the state Health Department is alerted when someone tests positive.

The couple posted bail, which was set at $1,000. They could face up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine if convicted.
