Most people think know the United Arab Emirates through the lens of its two most famous destinations, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. These glitzy metropolises, with their towering skyscrapers and opulent lifestyles, have become the poster children of the UAE. But sitting quietly on the eastern coast of this extravagant nation is Fujairah, an emirate that may be smaller and less celebrated but certainly worth getting to know.

Geography and Charm

Fujairah is the only emirate on the UAE’s east coast, surrounded by the mighty Hajar Mountains on one side and the Gulf of Oman on the other. It’s not trying to compete with the skyscrapers or artificial islands of its famous siblings, but that’s where its charm lies. Rough mountains, perfect beaches, and a calm, relaxed atmosphere make this a refreshing break from the fast-paced city life.

When it comes to the weather, Fujairah has the climate on its side. While the rest of the UAE wilts under the scorching summer sun, Fujairah manages to keep its cool with temperatures a few degrees lower. This pleasant weather makes it a perfect destination all year round. So, if you’re tired of melting in Dubai’s heat or drenched in Abu Dhabi’s humidity, Fujairah welcomes you with open arms.

Historical Significance

Fujairah may be smaller, but it certainly isn’t younger. In fact, it’s one of the oldest emirates in the UAE, with a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. An excellent example of the emirate’s historical importance is the Fujairah fort, which dates back to the 17th century and is in excellent condition.

From its hilltop location, this mud-brick monument provides staggering views of Fujairah and the surrounding area, as well as insight into the city’s rich history. If you have a penchant for history, a visit to the Al-Badiyah Mosque is a must. This modest yet captivating mosque, believed to be the oldest in the UAE, offers a glimpse into the architectural and spiritual heritage of the emirate.

Beaches and Beyond

The UAE is known for its luxurious beaches, and Fujairah is no exception. The coastline here boasts superb sand and crystal-clear waters that invite you to relax and unwind. One such gem is Khor Fakkan Beach, a tranquil paradise offering swimming, snorkeling, and water sports with the views of the stunning Hajar Mountains. And, if you’re lucky, you might spot a pod of dolphins frolicking in the Gulf of Oman.
