Loyalty programs aren’t just for your favorite restaurants, stores or airlines, anymore — Maldives will be offering its tourists a loyalty program, making it the first country to do so. 

According to an announcement made by the official Maldives Immigration Twitter account, “Maldives Border Miles is a three-tiered loyalty program for tourists. Tourists will earn points based on the number of visits and duration of stay. Additional points will be awarded for visits to celebrate special occasions.”

The three tiers will consist of Abaarana (Gold), Antra (Silver), and Aida (Bronze). These names derive from Divehi, the primary local language of the Indian Ocean nation.’

Maldives’ economy relies a lot on tourism and this could be an initiative to get more travelers after to COVID-19 pandemic. The country reopened its borders this summer and travelers began returning in July. 

The program is set to launch in December 2020 but it has not yet been announced what perks travelers will redeem and how the points system will work.
