When traveling worldwide, there’s nothing more fulfilling than exploring Black artwork throughout the destination. Whether traveling internationally or within the States, pockets of art from children of the African diaspora can be found everywhere. From graffiti murals and Black-owned galleries to major festivals, you never know where you may stumble upon a gem from talented Black artists.
According to a new study by Singularart, Black artists only make up 11.9 percent of displayed American galleries. Despite this lack of representation, Black artists are taking up space and shining in some cities more than others. In Virginia Beach, 18.9 percent of featured artwork is created by non-white artists. However, Miami reigns as the city with the most Black art in galleries.
Singularart’s analysis revealed that 60 percent of the artwork featured in Miami galleries is by non-white artists. Of those featured artists, the majority are African-American. Miami has long been a cultural hub so it’s no surprise Black art is thriving. Here’s what you need to know about the Floridian city becoming a hub for Black art.
Black-owned Art Galleries
While it may have the most Black art featured in the country, Miami doesn’t have a huge Black population. According to the US Census Bureau, of the over two million people living in Miami-Dade County, only 17.1 percent are Black. However, that doesn’t stop Black art from taking center stage in the city.
One way to experience the Black art culture in Miami is by visiting Black-owned art galleries. Founded by Morehouse grad and art curator Jumaane N’Namdi, the N’Namdi Contemporary Miami is a hotspot for finding Black artwork. The gallery features Black artists like Senghor Reid, Rashid Johnson, and Nanette Carter.
Another great Black-owned gallery to check out in Miami is Afrikan Art. The gallery features exhibits from more than 20 Black artists throughout the year. There’s a little bit of every type of creativity at Afrikan Art. From Afrofuturism and the art of tapestry weaving, the gallery is a hub of artwork inspired by the Diaspora.
