The COVID-19 pandemic halted my second year in Milan, bringing me indoors just as I was getting my hang of the city. Now that I’ve gotten my bearings around the city, I’m enjoying rediscovering and experiencing new things. One example is Milan’s booming Black arts and entertainment scene, which exists behind the city’s mainstream image. The city offers a unique and exciting glimpse into the African diaspora, from galleries showcasing contemporary African art to lively Afrobeat dance clubs.
Celebrate Black Artists
What’s clear is that an artistic melting pot is emerging as Milan gradually embraces Afro-cultures. There’s still a long way to go, but the shift is evident. Any Black traveler interested in contemporary art must visit the Spazio Maiocchi in the center of Milan. This dynamic art space regularly hosts exhibitions featuring Black artists, allowing them to showcase their unique perspectives.
For more excellent examples of African art, you should also check out Primo Marella Gallery. Primo Marella Gallery supports and documents new artistic movements and artists outside Europe. The gallery’s program expanded from China in the late 90s to other regions, including Africa. Their goal is to be at the forefront of presenting a complex and ever-changing artistic scene.
Groove To The Beat
The good news for Afrobeats fans is that Milan’s Afrobeat scene is alive and kicking, with clubs like Biko offering electrifying music and dance nights. Biko, a cozy and intimate venue, is renowned for hosting some of the best Afrobeat shows in the city. From Fela Kuti-inspired grooves to contemporary Afro-fusion sounds, the stage at Biko has seen it all. The energy is palpable, and the music is infectious.
Ebony Nights Community is one of Milan’s first events to center around Afrobeat music. They offer a quality evening where music and entertainment are the center of attention. They have also expanded Ebony Nights Milan to other locations, such as Brescia, Novara, and Lake Garda, so you can get your Afrobeat fix while exploring other Lombardy hotspots.
