If you saw the amazing multi-tier cake created for Jay-Z’s birthday a few years back or Cardi B’s ‘Invasion of Privacy’ cake, then you have seen the work of Black-woman owned B Cake NY. Owner Miriam Milord and her team are baking up cakes for our favorite celebrities, but there’s so much more to this Brooklyn-area bakery.
Miriam grew up in Germany where she was raised by her Ghanian father and German mother. She made the decision to move to Brooklyn at the age of 19 because it was home to a melting pot of cultures and she connected to that.
After wanting to purchase a cake for a friend’s baby shower and seeing how expensive the cakes were, she decided to try her hand at cake making.
“I used my art background and YouTube to get me through,” Miriam Milord told Travel Noire. “I struggled but the cake turned out nice.”
The cake was so good that people at the baby shower raved about it. This was the official start of Miriam’s cake baking career. She started making cakes as a side hustle to her full-time job at a local art gallery. People were really into the way that she mixed art and food.
She eventually took the leap of faith and rented a small loft to bake out of. Luckily, she got a lot of press early own which pushed the company even higher. In 2009, she opened her storefront on Washington Avenue in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.
“Opening the storefront was another level and scary. It took a few years for us to really even out.”
Now at the official 10-year mark, B Cake NY is one of the most sought after cake shops for celebrities and people throughout the Brooklyn neighborhood.
While getting business from clients like Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Cardi B are an honor, Miriam admits that cakes that touch her personally are her favorites to make.
“We’ve worked with several charities including Make-a-Wish, those experiences were life-changing.”
In addition to custom creative cakes and cupcakes, the bakery also offers pre-made cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and small cakes that can be purchased by simply walking in.
Miriam and her team also work with young girls of color to show them that great cake makers aren’t only older white males.
“To this day, people still come in looking for a man to be the owner of my shop,” Miriam said. “Until people aren’t surprised by me being owner, there’s still work to do.”
She works closely with the girls through an internship program to show them that this is a career that they can do and that there are people within the industry that look like them.
“I want it to be the norm. A reputable cake baker that’s also Black. We’re chipping away at it in our own way and letting people know that we are Black-woman owned. I also want my daughter to know that she can do anything!”
