Planning a trip to Spain anytime soon? The Spanish government has just confirmed that Spain will offer free rail journeys on certain services from September to the end of 2022.

Some train journeys will be free across certain state-owned rail network, Renfe, from 1 September to the end of the year.

The government declared that travel across certain parts of the state-owned rail network, Renfe, would be free from 1 September to the end of the year. The change comes after the Spanish government already announced major changes last month. The central government agreed on a 30% discount on all public transport, including metros, buses and trams.

Spain To Introduce Free Rail Journeys

In efforts to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, the rail discounts will help both regular train users and travelers. The rail discounts apply to multi-trip journeys (commuter tickets) and medium-distance routes (approximately less than 300km). The discounts do not include single-journey tickets or long-distance travel. The discount for multi-journey has a minimum of 10 return trips.

“I’d like the people of Spain to know that I’m fully aware of the daily difficulties that most people have,” Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said in a statement. “I know salaries cover less and less and that it’s difficult to get to the end of the month.”

The announcement is going to be a scheme that saves money and environment. In a statement, the Spanish Ministry of Transport stated “This measure encourages to the maximum the use of this type of collective public transport to guarantee the needed daily commute with a safe, reliable, comfortable, economic and sustainable means of transportation, amid the extraordinary circumstances of the steady increase of energy and fuel prices.”
