Tesla released its 2021 “Impact Report” last week, sharing they will be covering travel costs for employees traveling out-of-state for abortions. The company’s new health insurance offerings include “travel and lodging support for those who may need to seek healthcare services that are unavailable in their home state.”
This announcement comes after last week’s Supreme Court leaked draft opinion to overturn Roe vs. Wade. The electric car company moved its headquarters from Silicon Valley to Texas last year, which bans abortions at about 6 weeks of pregnancy. Briscoe Cain, a Republican Texas State Representative states he would propose a law, preventing local governments in the Lone Star State from doing business with companies providing travel for employees getting abortions.
If Roe vs. Wade is overturned, it would mean individual states can restrict access to safe abortions.
Last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio introduced a bill that would prevent companies from claiming tax deductions on abortion-related expenses.
The company’s CEO Elon Musk tweeted in September, “government should rarely impose it’s will upon the people, and, when doing so, should aspire to maximize their cumulative happiness. That said, I would prefer to stay out of politics.”
Tesla has joined major companies such as Amazon, Apple, DoorDash, Lyft in providing travel benefits for employees seeking abortions.
