Travelers looking to explore Africa’s wildlife have a new glamping option thanks to Tsowa Safari Island, a small enclave in Zambezi National Park about 25 miles (40 kms) upstream from natural wonder Victoria Falls.
The exclusive camp comes courtesy of Isibindi Africa Lodges and will open on August 1, taking an intimate 12 guests per safari. “Tsowa” translates to “new beginnings,” an apt title as the island on which the camp is situated has never been inhabited. Safari campers will find ample shade under lush baobab and jackalberry trees as they scout for the elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, and antelopes that cozy up to the water’s edge.
Proximity to wild animals is as close to roughing it as island guests will get, as each tent comes with a small, covered veranda and an ensuite bathroom complete with a large indoor shower as well as a separate outdoor shower. An open-air dining area flows into a sunken fire-pit which overlooks the river, with the bar tent conveniently close by. The main lodge is linked to the pool where guests can enjoy a cocktail while gazing out at the Zambezi River.
Activities include game drives and strolls into the mainland park. Guided walks are available daily, as are sunset cruises and river canoe trips.
Rates start at $440 per person per night and are inclusive of accommodations, meals, local drinks, game drives, and other activities, including a round trip to Victoria Falls.
