A digital nomad visa may soon be available for international travelers interested in working remotely in Spain. The new visa is one element of the country’s new Startup Act and is expected to pass in January 2023.

Currently, living and working in Spain require finding a job in Spain. Working remotely in Spain is not allowed when entering visa-free or even with the Spain Schengen Visa, schengenvisainfo reports.

Once the new law passes, digital nomads can apply for the visa, however, working for a company based outside of Spain is a topline requirement. Applicants must also meet the minimum income criteria, estimated between €1,000 to €3,000.

Similar to other countries, launching the visa is an opportunity to attract international talent to Spain.

“The Startup Law is one of the major commitments of this legislature and is part of the set of reforms to improve the country’s business climate, along with the Create and Grow Law and the Bankruptcy Law, approved this year. It is also one of the most important milestones for this year within the Digital Spain 2026 Agenda, the roadmap for the ambitious digitization plan that the country is carrying out,” said Spain’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation in a statement.

The Startup Law is also attempting to stimulate investment in Spain. The new law aims to bring an influx of foreigners to tighten cooperation between emerging companies as well as Universities and research centers, the report said.

Within the Digital Spain 2026 Agenda, the law has been considered among the most important milestones for this year.
