Australian airline Qantas Airways has decided to part ways with their vegan options on their flight menu, leaving vegetarians out of luck on meals when traveling with the airline.

A spokesperson for Qantas stated the airline made changes to the food and services during the pandemic. Mainly, to make it easier on the flight crew during service delivery.

Qantas now only offers one food option on shorter domestic flights. Meaning, passengers can decide between having the option or not eating at all.

“We now offer a single meal/snack option per flight on our shorter flights, such as a chicken pie or a zucchini and onion frittata,” stated a spokesperson from Qantas.

“If the option on a particular flight is not suitable for vegetarians, we try to offer an alternative of a small sweet or savory snack which is vegetarian.”

The spokesperson from Qantas did confirm that customers taking longer or international flights can preorder their on flight meal online. The “special meals” already include gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options.

Social media has been in an uproar after finding out about the airlines reducing their vegan options. Stating that this decision doesn’t only affect vegetarians but also people who don’t eat meat due to cultural or religious reasons.

“Chicken Pot Pie Or Nothing”

Jon Dee, an environmentalist, noticed the change to the airline menu over the weekend.

On a flight from Adelaide to Sydney the airline told Dee they no longer serve vegetarian food on their domestic flights. There would only be vegetarian food available on flights to Perth from Adelaide.

“What kind of airline stops offering vegetarian food to its passengers? It was chicken pie or nothing tonight,” stated Dee on twitter.
